THE APPARITION SCENE: OF 2012 AND SEERS AND A PULSE THAT BEATS 'FINAL' MESSAGES

How goes the prophetic pulse?

Matters continue to slowly unfold and sometimes not so slowly. Right now, after Halloween, after All Saints Day (after a week of battle), a lull. Still, there is currently a great agitation of the spirit and there will be a flurry of sensationalism in two weeks as a film based on the premise of major world-changing events in 2012 is released by Hollywood.

The movie is spurred by the notion that major events loom because an ancient Mayan calendar that runs in 5,100-year cycles ends that year.

While it doesn't actually end (it is reset), the notion is too exotic for the media to let go and there are all kinds of convergences, from economic forecasters who have pointed to that as the year of real financial comeuppance to those who indicate it as another presidential election year in the U.S. to astronomers who say the eclipse of our solar system will pass across the equator of the Milky Way that year (many calculate on December 21, 2012, at 11:11 universal time), which some think will unleash new gravitational forces.

One can be almost certain that major events will not occur at designated times (everyone should keep Y2K in mind), though there are a number of peculiar aspects to 2012 -- some of them with an occult undercurrent.

The year 2012? The number eleven? We have covered these from all angles. Also, folks still awaken oddly right at three a.m. At any rate, prepare for a "2012" onslaught, knowing that such a year could be wildly premature, or that events could happen before then. God owns the calendar.

What of the reputed secrets of Medjugorje -- the famed, controversial site?

In a recent interview, Father Petar Ljubicic [left], the priest who will be told the secrets granted to seer Mirjana Soldo ten days before they occur, confirmed to an interviewer (from www.medjugorje.com) that the predictions are on a strange "parchment."

"When the time comes for the secrets to be released, rather the first secret, ten days before, she will give me this parchment," asserts the Franciscan. "I will then be able to read the first secret and then, along with her, I will fast for seven days and pray. Then I would be able to reveal to the world what will take place: where, how, and how long. That is before every secret."

"I will first tell my closest and intimate friends," he explained. "They would be ready and pray. And, of course, through the internet, television, and radio nowadays, and satellite, I believe that that would be the easiest duty. For me, it is most important that people would be ready."

Might events occur in the next few years -- an intensification that precipitates into an event related to the first secret?

Father Petar's own intuition (on the first secret) is "a feeling that this may come very, very soon."

Medjugorje has been in the news of late on the one hand because the local bishop, Ratko Peric, again has stirred against the apparitions (limiting parish involvement with the messages) while a papal nuncio from Austria -- Archbishop Stephan Zurbriggen -- recently visited the site with a group of pilgrims, seeming to endorse it.

Far more controversial are the endless claims, often spawned by Medjugorje, of locutions or apparition elsewhere.

One that escaped our notice is a small group of seers in the "Treasure Valley" of Idaho (around Boise), including a woman whose "public messages" contain warnings to convert with a definite tone and verbiage about time running short. The alleged experiences have occurred in many locations, among them the Chapel of the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart in Boise. Visions and messages were approved by her spiritual director and priest, the late John F. Donoghue. "This is the last time He will allow me to come bearing these messages and in His Grace, He has given me permission to speak to many," was one reputed quote from the Blessed Mother back when the messages started 17 years ago.

Another Boise seer, a lawyer named Sharon Grisham, seems to see Mary in "interior visions" and says that before her mystical experiences (which began in an empty church, and then extended to a visit to Medjugorje in 1989) she was a "born-again atheist" who disbelieved in miracles like rosaries turning to gold (which she thought was "crazy") and questioned her own initial experiences as psychotic. Besides her law degree, Sharon has a degree in psychology as well as gemology (having once owned a jewelry store).

Upon return from Medjugorje, says Sharon, she put a number of rosaries under a microscope and also had them tested by scratching them and applying a chemical called "aqua regia" (usually nitro-muriatic acid) and found that they indeed had partly turned to gold. "Had I not gone to Medjugorje I would have died thinking I was alone in the universe," says the attorney, who is now nearly seventy after an eclectic career and like so many senses a great current agitation in the spirit, but focuses on the need for each soul to purify instead of looking only at the general state of the world.

Meanwhile, in Ireland -- which last saw an explosion in alleged seers during the late 1980s and early 1990s -- a hot controversy has erupted as thousands have defied a local bishop's directive to stay away a "clairvoyant's" claim that Mary has and will at least once more appear at the famed old apparition site of Knock. [At left, the sun there last week.]

The clairvoyant or seer, Joe Coleman -- who also has a connection to Medjugorje (saying he once saw Mary there) -- had said 50,000 would show for a predicted appearance there on Saturday (Halloween). The headline in Irish Central after, "10,000 faithful disappointed as Virgin Mary fails to show at Knock; Organizer claims he saw Our Lady and that she revealed a 'secret' message." Coleman asserts that the Blessed Mother will appear again in December.

"Should we not change after the sign, God will send a few punishments," says yet another seer. "One of them will be a great flood. If we don't change after the flood, then He'll send plagues."

We'll take it under advisement.

As at Lourdes, many are those who have claimed to see visions and hear locutions since the first reports at Medjugorje. Will it be like Lourdes -- where 48 of the fifty alleged seers were condemned by the bishop (St. Bernadette being one of the two who were not)?

Stay tuned -- before and after 2012.
